Guest lecturer at NCAD Materials Literacy course!
I was invited by me eXXpedition sea-sister, Claire McCluskey, to give a lecture to her students in the Material Literacy course she created and delivered. The course formed part of NCAD’s Studio+ and Visual Culture+ Programme.
The aim of my participation was to talk about the relevance of design in conservation and how it aligns to international commitments such as SDG 14, using my experience as an inspiration the students could aspire to. My audience was comprised of students coming from many diverse areas of design such as graphic design and fashion.
I was honoured to be able to tell them my story and show them that it’s possible to unite creativity with ocean conservation :)
“For me, it was today’s talk with Juliana Corrales. For so long, I have been like ‘oh I don’t know if graphic design is for me’ because I was just thinking about sitting at a desk all day long when I could be out helping or doing something to aid this climate crisis for the sea and animals. I feel like I wouldn’t be doing any help to the world by just doing a normal 9-5 job in return for money. I want to help, I want to communicate this crisis to people and inform them as much as I can and pass the knowledge to somebody else that may not have any. I just thought hearing Juliana talk about her experience made me be so mind-blown to the thought that I can bring graphic design into the communication of this crisis in that way. That I can actually help out! “
